Star Lane are a low yielding, small vineyard operation who hand craft small batches of the most superlative Beechworth wines. Confined to a precious precinct of Yarra Valley, is a belt of superb red earth renowned for producing wines of exceptional quality. Named Benno to celebrate the late, great Benno Seppelt's endeavours to promote Victoria as the nation's premiere wine growing region, Seppelt maintain the tradition begun in 1851, of producing Grand Cru quality Victorian Shiraz, a responsibility that the winemaking team do not take lightly. A glad all over, western districts Shiraz with strong regional expression and superior concentration of fruit. Hamish Seabrook comes from a long line of wine merchants, most notably W.J Seabrook & Son. He has made the most of his family's contacts in the industry to isolate and secure parcels of the finest Pyrenees Shiraz, all grown to great vineyards, closely husbanded by the most devoted local vignerons. Crafted to an old fashioned claret style, driven by a hansom carriage of refined, ebony oak tannins, brimming with the moreish decadence of spiced cherry ripeness and chocolate plum richness.

Robin Brockett has been chief winemaker at Scotchmans Hill since the 1980s, he knows Bellarine's best growers and is completely conversant with every microclime around the greater Geelong. Heathcote specialist Peter Dredge has worked alongside Hoddle Creek Estate's Franco d'Anna and McLaren Vale's eminent Ben Riggs at nearby Sanguine Estate. Planted in 1971 to ancient Cambrian soils, the unirrigated single parcel of mature vines at Red Edge yields a scant one to 1½ tons of fruit per acre. Melbourne entrepreneur Ross Shelmerdine commissioned industry maestro Colin Preece in 1967 to find the best Victorian sites for making great wine. Preece chose an old grazing property in the Nagambie district of central Victoria for its climate, soil and proximity to waterways. Preece Shiraz is still vinified at the renowned Mitchelton wineworks, sourcing the best fruit from a diversity of vineyards to create a rich complex wine with expressions of spiced plum and juicy blackberries, supported by fine tannins and a measure of elegant vanilla oak.

Port Phillip Vineyard is quite small at only nine hectares, there are however unique microclimes within the property which make a rather articulate wine. During the harvest of a finer, warmer growing season, the team may set aside fruit fom a half hectare block of older vines, for a limited edition Shiraz of added richness, elocution and depth. Serenne makes a wine of dulcetly aromatic, black plum and mulberry flavours, a measure of vegemite savouryness and the piquancy of spiced game, the tannins are conspicuously tranquil, secure yet serene.

Blessed by the finest microclimes in Mornington, the Port Phillip property is a decidedly cooler suntrap amongst the undulating folds of scenic vistas near Red Hill. There are a mere half hectare of Port Phillip Shiraz vines, fully mature and cosseted with care, they yield the most engaging quality of harvest on the peninsula with each and every vintage. A wine of concentration, brooding fruit and evocative savouryness, the Shiraz of choice to decant and breathe, before service alongside charred meats, crackling pork or Chinese duck.

Pondalowie was established with particular wines and styles in mind. Pondalowie have taken an impressive number of international awards, cementing their reputation as a leading producer, highlighting the strength of Bendigo as an elite provenance of world class Shiraz. A profound construct of Bendigo Shiraz, rich and complex with lovely integration between intense dark fruit flavours and fine, ideally suited to juicy meats, trimmed by caramelised onion and dressed in red wine jus.

Marc Scalzo takes time out from his duties as chief winemaker at Rutherglen Estates to tend his closely coddled Beechworth vines. The two regions share a predisposition to yield structured Shiraz of remarkable purity and finesse, wines that are highly articulate of their very special terroir. The mineral rich hills of Beechworth impart added elegance and a conspicuous measure of Burgundian savoir faire. There are precious few plantings on Harry's Block but they yield the most invaluable fruit, immaculately crafted into the first growth of Beechworth Shiraz.

One of Heathcote's longest established winemakers, Paul Osicka planted his vines in the 1950s, when Heathcote as a winegrowing region was but a twinkle in the eye. Old fashioned practices are employed in the vineyard. Vines are hand pruned and fruit is selectively hand picked. A high profile local identity and a bit of a cult figure, Osicka specializes in raising parcels of intensely flavoured grapes which translate into vigorous Shiraz wines. Osicka's small batch production is highly anticipated each year by Shiraz enthusiasts in the know.

Paringa Estate has established an unassailable repute over the last twenty years as one of the leading small winery vineyards in the country, named Australian Winery of the Year by James Halliday. Paringa Shiraz won a total of six trophies including Best of Show at the 2006 Royal Sydney, sweeping the field with five Gold Medals and five Trophies, including the prestigious Best of Show and Best Shiraz at the 2009 Royal Sydney, as well as Best Shiraz Trophy Royal Melbourne. Nillumbik means shallow earth, so named by the original inhabitants to signify a lack of top soils lost to undulating terrains. The western edges of Yarra Valley are covered by a harsh and hilly topography which can challenge winemakers as the unaccomodating soils and aspects produce grapes of concentration and intensity. Fruit is sourced from the eminent Witchmount Vineyard which claimed Best Shiraz of the World trophy at the Syrah Du Monde in 2008. A richly flavoured wine characterized by its cool climate fruit characters, blackberries, pepper and spice.

Excellent Langtons Classification. A long and extended growing season means that the Mount Langhi property is one of the last blocks to be harvested in Victoria. Also of significance is that only the best berries are carefully picked off the precious old vines. The famous Langhi Ghiran is fermented in traditional open, shallow, concrete tanks, before ageing in a selection of the finest oak barrels. It is the strong synergy between a unique microclime, fastidious viticulture and proficiency at winemaking that can achieve the paragon which is Langi Ghiran.

Excellent Langtons Classification. Crafted from fruit grown to the renowned Old Block on the Mount Langi Ghiran property, established by the Fratin family in 1963, the vines are nearing a half century of age. A deeply flavoured, compelling Shiraz from the parched aspects of Victoria's Grampian ranges, it stands as one of Australia's most esteemed and stately wines.

Mount Langi make Victoria's most profound Shiraz, the confluence of parched and inhospitable terrains, exhilerated by the sobering Grampians winds, coax grapevines into concentrating flavours and intensifying the natural fruit sugars as berries slowly ripen. The wines of Mount Langi are renowned for their redolent bramble spice perfumes and generously weighted palates, as supported by such long lived, stately tannins. A luxurious effervescent Shiraz, extravagantly aged two years in own bottle and fashioned to a clean, ebullient contemporary styling.

A pure Grampians Shiraz, much of the fruit from vines planted to the eastern granite slopes of Mount Langi Ghiran. A significant whole bunch maceration component is central to the style, building on the perfumes and delicate aromatics. Showing terrific weight of fruit flavours, complex spice and balanced tannins. Increasingly, Mount Langi are reaping the harvest of some sensational old rootstock, sown decades ago. These cossetted parcels of vine may be challenging to manage but they yield the finest Shiraz in the greater Grampians region. The pick of these younger, albeit fully mature blocks represent a significant inclusion in Cliff Edge Shiraz, delivering the requisite intensity of flavour, concentration and finesse, when assembled around a backbone of Mount Langi Ghiran's most precious old vines fruit.
